

Established in honor of Sydney Elizabeth McMakin, to memorialize her life and acknowledge the positive impact she made in the lives of her peers, this award will recognize a senior at James F. Byrnes High School who plans to attend the University of South Carolina Upstate.
The total award, in the amount of $4,000, will be distributed annually in equal amounts of $1,000 over a period of four years. If a student chooses to leave school or fails to meet academic eligibility, he or she will forfeit the remaining portion of the award.
Criteria
Applicants must:

Be a graduating senior from James F. Byrnes High School who meets the requirements for admission to USC Upstate.

Demonstrate financial need.

Maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Application Process
Applicants should:

Complete USC Upstate Foundation scholarship application before February 1, 2023.

Complete the FAFSFA form, providing proof of financial need by March 1, 2023.

Complete a 500 word essay to answer the following:

Discuss your academic goals.

Describe why you are a good candidate for the Sydney Elizabeth McMakin Memorial Scholarship.

If you receive this award, how do you plan to "pay it forward" using the education you acquire to help others?

Award recipients will be notified at the Senior's Awards Night at James F. Byrnes High School in May 2023.
